Emergency Medical Science

The Emergency Medical Science curriculum is only open to currently certified Paramedics. Qualified Paramedics will be granted 48 credit hours for their Paramedic certification and upon completion of the other requirements, will earn an A.A.S. in Emergency Medical Science.

This bridge degree program is designed to further the knowledge obtained in a continuing education Paramedic initial certification class to the A.A.S. degree level of knowledge in emergency medical science. It provides the student an opportunity to gain complex knowledge and competency in the field of EMS and also provides the student with specialized training in EMS Management in order to prepare the student for promotion and career advancement.

The required classes are offered entirely online. All interested Paramedics must speak to the program chair (Alan Thompson) prior to enrollment.

The initial Paramedic certification class, which does not result in a degree, is offered through our Corporate & Continuing Education department.

EMTs and paramedics respond to emergency calls, performing medical services and transporting patients to medical facilities.

Employment of emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and paramedics is projected to grow 8 percent from 2018 to 2028.

No two days in an EMT’s career are ever the same. Dispatch calls vary every day meaning you never know what can happen on the job from one minute to the next.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, EMTs and paramedics have an average salary of $36,790 in the state of North Carolina as of May 2020.

The national EMS community recommends that paramedics should move from a certificate to a degree. The program is designed to be a ‘bridge’ program in which students receive advanced standing, college credit, for course work completed during their paramedic certification.
